Tiffany Griffin is an olfactory artisan, loves a crafted sensory experience, and a social psychologist at heart, who daily uses scent as a creative, cooperative economic medium making Bright Black Candles.

We asked this chandler:

Who inspires you? So very many people and things. Young people--the passion of teenagers, the innocence of children--is inspiring. I also find folks who have had to traverse immense systemic adversity inspiring. These are some of the most hopeful, creative, hard working, selfless people on the planet. Blank canvases, possibility, and nature also inspire me.

Is all wax created equal? Ha! Do you mean candle wax? This question could go in a few different directions! If so, the answer is a big NOPE! We use incredibly high quality coconut and soy waxes that are all natural and burn super clean. They're also vegan.

What do you like most about your town? I appreciate the support and openness I've received from our community. I also appreciate how folks rally together to help one another.

What trait do you most appreciate in others? Too many to pick just one! Empathy, kindness, good listening skills, sense of humor. Shall I go on?

When are you happiest? I'm happiest when the creative and analytical parts of my mind are in balance, and when I am serving others.

If you could change one law, what would it be? Tough one, but I'd say, mandatory voting for all adults over the age of 18. This, ideally coupled with civics education! Voice and representation are at the core of change and creating the society so many of us want to live in.

What do people notice about you? Perhaps my smile or my authenticity? I'm not sure. Most people think I'm an extrovert, but I'm a really strong introvert and highly sensitive person. I also find that strangers talk to me a lot and tell me some pretty intimate details about their lives. So, perhaps people think I'm relatable? Non-judgmental? Accepting? Compassionate?

Do you have a motto? My personal motto is "The Odds Do Not Apply to Me." Check out the Jay-Z song "U Don't Know" for more.

Who are the most played music artists on your phone? My Top three artists from 2019, according to Spotify, were: 1. Alsarah and the Nubatones, 2. Gary Clark, Jr., and 3. The Rebirth Brass Band, with J. Cole in a close 4th spot.

What is love? Love is action, love is courage, love is forgiveness, and gratitude, and understanding, giving, care. It’s in our candles, too.
