Katie Hutchinson, better known as Katie Blvd, stole our hearts with her unique illustrations. Recently, we learned she is a Hip Hop artist too! We chatted:

I am ready to say goodbye to…
I’m working on some internal issues: personal comparison, pridefulness, and self image. I’m ready to say goodbye to the habits these issues have instilled.

Who or what challenges you creatively?
Listening to music that inspires me, going to shows, meeting fellow artists and seeing their grind and hard work, always challenges my ethic. However, I feel like my biggest challenger is myself, as I work to become the best version of me.

Which of your illustrations would you like to share with us and why?
Half / Half is my favorite illustration of mine so far. It was a spur of the moment idea and I think the concept came together so cleanly at an almost unconscious state of mind. I love themes of duality and juxtaposition - and this one has a lot of both!

Something that you love from the 90’s?
I loooove 90’s black shows & movies. They were a huge part of my childhood. A Different World and Living Single, Brown Sugar and Love Jones are a few of my favorites. Also, I truly believe hip hop & neo soul was at its peak in the 90s too. I wish I were old enough to have truly enjoyed it as it was released.

Do you sing in the shower? If so, what song?
Everyday! I hope my neighbors don’t mind, ha! Currently I’m switching between the theme song to “As Told By Ginger”, Sara Bareilles’s “Not Alone” and Georgia Ann Muldrow’s “Patience”.
